A superb essay by Laurie Penny on erotic capital, mechanized pornography, and the catastrophic effects of contemporary sexuality on emotional health. It reminded me of a friend’s post I caught on Facebook (which I can now no longer find) comparing the wearing of the Islamic burqa - the opaque visual barrier that hides the female body from greater society - to its opposite: the incessant sexualization of the American woman’s body in media, to the point where it is only available to society while being inaccessible to herself.
